Airport
Samoa's airport, known as Faleolo Airport, is located 37 kms from Apia city centre, and operates as both International and Domestic.

  • Monday to Friday 8am-12 noon & 1.30pm-4.30pm - some small shops and department stores are open throughout the lunch period
  • Saturday 8am-12.30pm

Climate
A warm tropical climate with temperatures ranging from 22ºC to 30ºC with May to November being the cooler months, while December to April are viewed as the rainy season, with average rainfall between 120–280 inches per year. The humidity averages 80% yearly with an average of 2500 hours of sunshine per year.

Currency & Banking
Samoa operates a decimal currency based on TALA for dollar and SENE for cents. The currency cannot be changed offshore. The Bank of Samoa, Pacific Commercial Bank and Post Office Savings Bank are all located in Apia and are open weekdays 9am-3pm. The Bank of Samoa provides Saturday services 8.30am-11.30am.

Customs & Dress
Local customs are part of daily life in Samoa and will be in evidence for the visitor at all times.

Departure Tax
International Departure tax is S$40.00 Adults over 12 years. Children under 12 years are exempt.

Drinking Water
It is recommended that visitors drink boiled water, or alternatively bottled water which is readily available in most stores at very reasonable prices throughout Samoa.

Duty Free
The following purchase allowance applies per person over the age of 18 years. Please note these allowances are provided as a guide only. They may be subject to change by the governing bodies without prior notice.

Electricity
240 voltage but can be converted to 110 volts in most hotels. Supply can be disrupted, especially in outlying areas. The electricity in the populated area of Upolu is a combination of hydro-electric and diesel-electric installations, whilst most of Savaii is wood-fuel turbine and diesel engine installations.

Languages
Samoan is the national language, but English is used in commercial and government business. Most Samoans are competent in English.

Location
Just 3 hours, 50 minutes flying time (ex NZ) due north east of New Zealand and Australia. Samoa offers the visitor a living culture to experience. The 2 main islands with tourist facilities are Upolu (Apia) and Savaii. Apia, the capital is situated on the island of Upolu and is an excellent base to begin exploring Samoa. Total land area is 2934 sq kms, including islands Upolu and Savaii and seven smaller islands.

Population
The population is over 160,000 citizens whose lifestyle is based on the extended family and village. Most of these people live in villages, each containing an average of 350 people who identify very strongly with their culture. Traditional authority is with the Matai system and each extended family (aiga) has a matai or chief who is appointed by consensus of the Aiga.

Shopping
Samoa does not have many international retail outlets. The most interesting shopping for visitors will be the colourful markets on the waterfront in Apia. There is a huge range of lava lavas, handcrafts, clothing, jewellery and more. Behind the flea markets is the bus stop and taxi stand - a great spot to people-watch!. The local fish market is right next door, where you can see the stands of colourful tropical fish.

The food markets, located on Fugalesi Street, offer a variety of fruit and vegetables along with handcrafts and local carvings and tapa cloths.

Tipping
Tipping is not compulsory in Samoa, but is acceptable, especially for excellent service. A small gift is welcomed just as much as a monetary tip.

Vaccinations & Health
A vaccination is required for Yellow Fever if arriving/departing within 6 days of visiting an infected area.
