About the Island
Norfolk Island is an external territory under the authority of Australia. Since 1979 it has had its own Legislative Assembly and it is responsible for its own revenue and laws. It has never had a deficit. Few Australian laws extend to Norfolk.

The area of the island is 3,455 hectares, its formation is volcanic and it has some remote geological connection with New Zealand. In addition to the Main island, there are two smaller ones to the south, both are uninhabited. Nepean, 1 km away and the smaller, is a low islet of coral sandstone. Phillip, approximately 7km off, is volcanic and rises to 300 metres. The coastline of Norfolk consists mainly of imposing cliffs, fringed by the Famous Norfolk Island pine trees which form some magnificent scenery. The south side however, is comparitively low lying and it is here that the Golden beaches of the lagoon, sheltered by a coral reef are found.

For a tiny island there is an amazing range of interesting events and shows on Norfolk Island, especially focusing on the historical events of Norfolk's colourful past, notably the "Mutiny on the Bounty". The dramatic re-enactment of Mutiny of the Bounty, featuring direct descendants of the mutineers in the cast of the Sound and Light Show using dramatic lighting and costumed actors depicting the horrifying decades of the convict era. Or spend the "Night as a Convict" and join the Commandant for an evening of gaiety, feasting, dancing and singing. There are also many activities available from golf, tennis, bowls, swimming, snorkelling, surfing, diving, fishing, boat hire, windsurfing, bushwalking and horseriding
